Tipi Covers

Strong and Durable Modern Fabrics

An integral feature of a tipi, the cover serves as your chrysalis – your protective shell separating inside from out. Although the original indigenous tipi cover design consisted of several bison hides, Earthworks Tipis covers consist of strong and durable modern fabrics learned from the military and outdoor industries. These functional and beautiful covers provide years of comfort and security.

Main Fabric & Seams

We offer two fabric choices:

  • 15 ounce Sunforger, a 100% cotton army duck fabric, treated for water, UV, and mildew resistance, and is available with or without flame retardant. Breathes nicely!
  • 15 ounce Timberline Cover, a cotton/poly blend with an acrylic coating and flame retardant rating. Available in off-white only, this choice is unmatched in strength and quality.

For effective water-run-off qualities, the main fabric seams are double-stitched and lapped (the joining fabrics are laid one upon another to create an overlap between the two).

Structure

Structural Integrity

Several features of Earthworks Tipi covers are designed to help the tipi retain strength and structural integrity, even in inclement weather.

Bison Hide Reinforcement

Top-grain bison hide rubbed with beeswax is used to reinforce high-stress areas: around the lifting tongue, the Cheyenne extensions, and completely around the door opening. The lacing pin holes below the door are sewn into a solid strip of buffalo hide as well.

Lacing Pin Holes

Lacing pin holes are heavily stitched and reinforced. In high-stress areas, we sew them through buffalo hide and additional tear-resistant fabric.

Hem and Loops

Two-inch webbing is sewn around the hem of each tipi. One-inch nylon loops are inserted every 30 inches to stake the tipi.

Shape & Functionality

Several features of Earthworks Tipi covers are designed to help create the tipi’s distinctive shape and abilities.

Fitted Gores

Gores are an exclusive feature of Earthworks Tipis. The gores are two long, wedge-shaped pieces sewn between the body of the tipi and the smoke flaps. They give the top of the tipi fullness so that the canvas wraps snugly around the cluster of poles without wrinkling.

Lifting Tongue

The lifting tongue of the cover is tied to the last pole you raise on the tipi. This high stress area has a panel of canvas and hidden vinyl reinforcing to distribute stress over a larger area and double buffalo hide to prevent tearing.

Smoke Flaps

The bottom edges of the smoke flaps extend to cover the opening above the lacing pins. The smoke flaps can also be adjusted to enhance the draw for an open fire. Smoke flap poles fit into sturdy, reinforced pole pockets at the top of the flaps.

Exterior Ties

Made of heavy weight cotton. This includes corner smoke flap loops, ties above the lacing pin holes and door hold downs.

Tipi Doors

A tipi door is created by providing your cover with an opening in the fabric.

Door Openings

Our standard door is approximately 48″ x 22″. It’s an egg-shaped opening, edged with buffalo hide to prevent wear, and is rigged with six door cover hold-down loops. We also offer an oversized door that is 60″ x 30″. The arched doorway is 72″ x 22″ and does not have the attachment at the bottom of the door. It’s best for uses where access and mobility are a concern.

Door Cover

Cover can tie shut from inside or outside. When shut, two horizontal ribs secure it and give it rigidity. It can also be rolled up and tied open. For ease of use, tie one side and swing the door cover open from the other side. Every Earthworks Tipi Package comes with a door cover.
