From a Single Tipi

Back in 1976 we made our home in a tipi. We set our lodge on a mountainside in Breckenridge, Colorado at 11,000 feet elevation and watched the stars pass and the seasons change. We were hooked on the simple life! It wasn't long before some of our friends wanted the same experience so we made them tipis. Soon after, we placed an ad in the classified section of Mother Earth News and began taking orders. The adventure called Earthworks Tipis began.

Over thirty years later this enterprise has evolved into the Colorado Yurt Company. Our tiny workshop moved from Breckenridge to Alma to Ridgway as we grew and is now a small campus in Montrose, Colorado, a beautiful little town at the base of the San Juan Mountains where we get over 300 days of sunsine a year. Our dedicated staff is a group of talented craftsmen and craftswomen who make guitars, climb mountains and do a whole host of other really interesting things when they aren't busy designing and creating yurts, tipis and tents.

We feel incredibly fortunate that our structures have become known and respected worldwide. What gives us real satisfaction, is providing all kinds of folks with the opportunity to wake up out in the woods where at least for a moment, there are no buzzes and beeps demanding attention; no sound of traffic and no to-do-list.

If you are moved to live, work or play in a unique structure and enjoy the gifts nature has to offer, let our experience be your shortcut to the backountry (or at least the backyard!) We would love to help you design and build a dream of your own.

Crew

A crew of over twenty-five very talented folks is responsible for the quality and service that go into each Colorado Yurt, Earthworks Tipi or Cimarron Tent. When you purchase one of our products you are tapping into an abundant collection of sewing, woodworking, design and customer service experience. Our family of employees takes great pride and care to craft a structure you will enjoy and feel safe in for years to come. We love seeing photos and hearing stories about how you are using your yurt, tipi or tent. Keep them coming!

Facility

We love it when people stop by to visit with us and see our products first hand. When you stop by The Colorado Yurt Company in Montrose, Colorado, you will have the opportunity to see many different options on a 20' and a 30' yurt. You'll also be able to sit in a 28' tipi right on our campus or compare tipis of many different sizes just down the road at the Ute Indian Museum. If a tent is what you're looking for, we have a 12'x14' platform tent we'd love to show you. Then let us give you the complete tour through our facility where you can see how our yurts, tipis and tents are made. Customers love to see the woodworking shop and huge sewing table with enormous amounts of fabric spilling onto it. Visit the facility Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 5:00. We'd also be happy to set up an appointment with you at other times. Just give us a call a few days ahead of time. 800.288.3190.

Environmental Efforts

The yurts, tipis and tents that we make use up far fewer natural resources than a traditional stick built structure. They also leave a very light footprint on the earth so you can take "leave no trace camping" one step further to "leave no trace living." The Colorado Yurt Company is comitted to environmentally friendly practices during the manufacturing process as well.

  • Passive solar and natural lighting in our primary production area.
  • Photovoltaic power in our display yurt.
  • Biodiesel fuel powers our trucks.
  • A hybrid vehicle gets us around town.
  • Rigorous recycling and reusing program.
  • Future environmental improvements include purchasing wind generated electricity and offering recyled denim insulation to our yurt customers.
